An Zoom Q&A with Awa Meité as part of the Woven Threads Lagos Fashion Week digital showcase.
From the 3-26 April, Lagos Fashion Week will present Woven Threads, a digital showcase inspired by traditional craft and the need to adopt a more responsible approach to producing fashion on the continent. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Woven Threads will solely be a digital presentation across Lagos Fashion Week’s social media platforms, in order to eliminate the requirement for a physical congregation and to enable remote participation for guests and facilitators. This will be combined with a series of digital live talks and workshops.
Three designers will present digital Fashion Open Studio events during Woven Threads to give an insight into how their work is made, the materials it is created from and the skilled makers and artisans involved in creating it. Awa Meité is a Malian fashion designer, filmmaker, painter, jeweller and director who creates handmade clothes using local materials and cotton from Mali. Mali is the largest cotton producing country in Africa and Meité is interested in drawing attention to all aspects of local cotton production, including the cotton growers, spinning wheel operators, artisans, dyers, embroiderers, tailors, and merchants.
